- Prestage Foods in North Carolina will host one of the largest solar thermal systems. Hot water from the 2,100-collector system is being provided to Prestage with no upfront costs as part of a solar thermal power purchase agreement with FLS Energy.
- A new Hampshire school entered into the first solar hot air power purchase agreement.
Solar at Military Facilities Gains Momentum
There was big news this week for one of the most ambitious projects to bring rooftop solar to military housing. Bank of America stepped in to provide SolarCity with a $1 billion loan to install up to 300 MW of solar capacity on military housing in 33 states over 5 years. Earlier this year, SolarCity lost a conditional loan guarantee from the US government for 80% of a $344 million loan to support the project in the wake of Solyndra’s collapse. the project has been scaled back slightly from a goal of 160,000 to 120,000 solar installations.
In other military renewable energy generation news, CoGenra’s solar cogeneration system was chosen as one of the twenty-seven projects for the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DoD) Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP). the ESTCP program seeks to monitor, test, and evaluate emerging energy solutions in a real world environment. CoGenra has received $2 million to install its solar electric and hot water cogeneration system at two military sites.
This month also featured a number of new solar project announcements and completions.
A 1.5 MW solar PV system is being installed at the Bachelor Enlisted Quarters complex at the U.S. Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
A 2.8 MW solar installation has been completed at two U.S. Coast Guard locations in Puerto Rico. the installation consists of 200 residential rooftops, six commercial rooftops, five carport arrays, and three ground-mount arrays.
The U.S. Army Reserve base in Arden Hills, MN is nearing completion on the largest solar installation in Minnesota in 2011. the 350+ panel system is expected to save the center up to $12,000 in electricity costs annually.
The Oregon Military Department announced Monday that 134 kW of solar PV will be installed on the rooftops of three warehouse facilities at the Oregon Emergency Response Center.
In December, construction is set to start on a 13.78-MW solar facility at the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, CA. the system from SunPower will provide more than 30 percent of China Lake’s annual energy load, helping to reduce costs by an estimated $13 million.

GloPak Corp. announced the installation of a 3,454-panel, 1-MW roof- and ground-mounted solar system at its South Plainfield, NJ manufacturing facility. the system is expected to save $180,000 annually on electricity costs.
L’Oreal installs its third solar system of 2012
L’Oréal USA installed a 60-panel, 13-kW solar array at its North Little Rock, AR manufacturing facility. while a solar array under 100 kW would hardly be news in many states, the commencement brought the governor of Arkansas and mayor of North Little Rock. according to a L’Oreal spokesperson, the array is the first industrial ground-mounted solar array in Arkansas. the system was funded in part by North Little Rock Electricity, which provided $60,000 for the solar panels, and a $26,000 rebate from Arkansas’ energy office. This is part of L’Oreal’s commitment to reduce GHG 50 percent of 2005 levels by 2015.

Sanborn Regional High School in new Hampshire signed the first power purchase agreement for hot air provided by ultra-efficient solar thermal hot air collectors. the ten-year contract will provide the district with 1,4000mm BTU’s of thermal energy and is expected to save at least $17,000 annually off the schools fuel-oil heating bills. Enerconcept Technologies is providing four Lubi™ wall-mounted solar hot air collectors. the collectors will cover 8,000 sq ft of the school’s southern wall and provide a majority of the school’s heated make-up air requirements. Revolution Energy is providing financing and Shift Energy is installing and connecting the system to the school’s HVAC system.
Turkey Farm to Host Mega Solar Thermal System
Construction has begun on a solar thermal system at Prestage Foods in St. Pauls, NC. the solar thermal system will provide the 260,000 sq ft turkey processing facility with an estimated 100,000 gallons of hot water per day. the 2,100 ground-mounted flat-plate collectors will be installed in three phases, each consisting of 700 collectors. Phases one and two are expected to be complete by March 2012. the system required a custom designed pump house and solar storage system, which can provide hot water for the facility 24 hours a day. FLS Energy will own and operate the system and sell Prestage energy for water heating at a rate below the cost to heat water from propane.

Morgan Solar, a startup whose technology uses optics to boost solar cells’ power output, said on Tuesday that it’s lined up $9.8 million to commercialize is technology.
The funds come from Canada-based Enbridge, an oil and gas distribution company that recently became a solar power plant developer (the company also invests in wind, geothermal and fuel cell installations). the money is the first solar technology investment by Enbridge, which owns three solar farms that use First Solar’s solar panels. Morgan Solar’s co-founder and vice president of business development and marketing, Nicolas Morgan, told us earlier this year that the company wanted to raise $20-$25 million. the company, based in Toronto, Canada, needed the capital to jumpstart production at a factory in California, where it also has gotten a $3.3 million loan from the California Energy Commission to set up its manufacturing facility in Chula Vista, near San Diego.

Higher concentrating systems require more precise tracking and control systems, and they use more expensive but also more efficient solar cells that use a mix of materials such as gallium-arsenide and germanium.
Concentrating photovoltaic technology has been garnering more investments lately. California-based Solaria, which is develops low-concentrating technology, recently raised $30 million.
Morgan Solar’s CPV system comes with its Sun Simba solar panels and a tracker it called Savanna, which it unveiled in September this year.
Aside from Enbridge and Nypro, other Morgan Solar investors include power generation giant, Iberdrola and the Frost Group. Including the B round, Morgan Solar has raised $38 million total since its inception in 2007.

Getting the most out of Your Pergola, think Solar Power Panel
Sitting in a meeting the other day, I was listening to a discussion on where to put half-a-million dollars worth of solar power panels. The discussion considered placing panels on roofs, on picnic shelters, and carports – it’s not easy trying to find a place for a bunch of solar panels. After all, there are things to keep in mind like sun exposure, roof wear and tear, vandalism, and roof space.
I was in favor of simply building more carports – cars like to park out of the rain and out of the sun and it seemed like a good idea to have the solar panels contribute more than just electricity. The panels could contribute shade and weather protection. Work a little at positioning the parking areas and the carports to receive the most sun and call it good.
At some point, around the discussion table, the term Pergola was used. I have not heard that word often and was not sure just what this Pergola thing was. I will admit, I was immediately in favor of the idea, even before I was aware of the true definition. The term Pergola just sounds nice and friendly, along with sounding sophisticated – like Italian opera, you know, water everywhere, a neat little boat and a singing Italian.
Now, who wouldn’t want solar panels on something that sounds so inviting. just the sound of it, a Pergola with solar panels, right there in the back yard, has to be good.
Shortly after the meeting, I researched Pergola on the internet and summoned up a few pictures. Basically, I was somewhat disappointed. I live in the rain forest of the Northwest and the second I saw all the lumber that was left out in the rain, all I could see was moisture damaged wood that was going to need to be replaced or repainted. most Pergola’s pictured had parts of the roof framing sticking out in the weather. not a good, rain forest, design. I even found a bunch of pictures with solar panels already on a Pergola. Hey, that’s my idea
Seems a Pergola is more like a partial shade covering. something built out of heavy timbers that doesn’t have siding and doesn’t have a roof that will totally keep out either the sun or the rain. My first thought was that a Pergola is good for about three things.
1. Looking nice until the weather has a chance to make it look not-so-nice.
2. Providing partial shade for a garden or a quiet cup of tea, about once a year.
3. Allowing a vine maple to climb all over it until you dread the thought of having to trim all those vines.
But now we’ve got something new to consider – something that will make the Pergola a whole lot more useful – something that I am sure the Italians have already thought of. After all, the Italians are really big on solar power. Italy has one of the highest concentrations of residential solar power in the world.
Install Solar Power Panels on a Pergola
Don’t let the Pergola go to waste, I suspect many have been constructed with the plans of having one picnic and one cup-of-tea after another under the shade of the see-through roof. Problem is, life goes too fast and the picnics and tea time get cut back until they’re few and far between. After the initial love affair wears off, all that is left is a Pergola that needs a new paint job. But, what about putting solar panels on the roof of the Pergola.
This is the type of commitment to clean, renewable power that we need. You want a Pergola, design it so it fits your yard and sits in the sun most of the day. Design the roof trusses so the solar panels attach with ease. Design the solar panel layout to cover all those roof truss tails so you don’t have to repaint so often. (especially if you live in a rain forest.)
The solar panel roof can either be rain proof or not. for a little more expense, you can install a nice clean metal roof and then attach the solar panels to the ribs of the metal roof. Now when you want to have a cup of tea in the yard, you can have it in the shade of the Pergola and dream about all the power your producing instead of thinking about how badly those roof trusses need to be repainted.
Don’ t sit under your stylish Pergola watching the vine maple takeover the integrity of the structure. Sit under the Pergola and listen to the faint hum of the DC Watt Inverter changing all those Watts to clean, renewable, AC Power.

If you are proposing to renew the roof tiles on your home, or planning a new building project, you should seriously consider installing solar PV tiles. Integrated solar roof tiles are visually much more attractive than an array of standard solar photovoltaic panels. They can be installed on most homes and are easily connected to the power supply. They will produce electricity that can be used in your home and make you money on the electricity you don’t use.
How do They Work?
Solar PV tiles generate electricity from the sun using the same principles as standard solar photovoltaic panels. Solar tiles are manufactured to the same unit size as large format roof tiles; typically one tile high and several tiles wide. They fit directly onto roofing battens, replace conventional roof tiles and provide a completely weathertight finish.
Is Your Roof Suitable?
You will need to establish that your roof is large enough to accommodate the solar PV tiles and that the roof structure is sufficiently strong to carry the extra weight. Depending on the manufacture, solar tiles can be integrated with plain or profiled roofing tiles.
Is Your Roof Orientated towards the Sun?
In the UK, solar roof tiles must be installed so that they are orientated in a southerly direction to face a point between South-East and South-West. The angle of roof pitch will vary, depending on the design of the house but the tilt will normally be between 20 and 60 degrees from the horizontal.
Straightforward to Install
An appropriately trained roofer can easily fit solar tiles alongside most types of large format roof tiles. Laying the roof tiles and the solar PV tiles in the same operation will help avoid unnecessary delays to the contract.
Connecting the Electrics
When the roofing work and the solar PV tile installation are complete, the solar tiles can be connected to the electrical circuit in the building. The cabling from the solar tiles will be concealed in the sloping roof structure and, if the roof void is not used, the control equipment can be accommodated inside the roof space. in order to comply with UK building regulations all electrical work in a domestic property must be carried out by a fully qualified and registered electrician.
Feed in Tariffs
Clean Energy Cashback is a UK government sponsored incentive scheme designed to encourage the introduction of renewable electricity. During daylight hours, the electricity generated by the solar roof tiles will supply the home and any surplus will be sold on to the electricity supplier, through an approved import/export meter. During periods of high energy use in the home, or when the solar roof tiles are unproductive, electricity can be bought back from the supply network.
If you decide to have solar tiles fitted to your roof you should contact your local planning department and ask for advice before you commit yourself to any course of action. If you intend to join the clean Energy Cashback scheme you must ensure that your installer and the solar PV tile products and equipment used in the installation are approved and registered to the Microgeneration Installation Standard.
