Worcester Telegram & Gazette – telegram.com – Sustainability is the new buzzword at businesses big and small

Luz Gonzalez recently put a brick in her office toilet. She did it with two goals in mind: cut costs and help protect the planet. The brick sits in the tank of the old toilet. Its presence means a little less water is wasted with every flush. Ms. Gonzalez, a broker who owns Community Realty in Worcester, also replaced her printer paper with recycled paper, started switching the old ceiling lights with more efficient LEDs, and got rid of the plastic cups that used to sit next to the water cooler. Instead, a sign on the water cooler directs thirsty visitors to ask for a reusable mug. More and more, businesses of all sizes are taking steps like these under the banner of sustainability. for some, the primary goal is to be kinder to the planet. But most companies are addressing sustainability in an effort to save costs and gain business. “Because of the economy, people are looking everywhere they can to save money,” said Robert A. Rio, senior vice president of Associated Industries of Massachusetts. “They’re embracing this new concept of sustainability.” Loosely defined, sustainability means preserving resources for future generations. that includes green, or environmentally friendly, practices. But sustainability is also about long-term economics and social issues. in the business world, it means adhering to the triple bottom line — people, planet and profit, said bill Bean, a consultant from Tyringham who advises businesses in green and sustainability issues. “A sustainable business looks at every strategic decision they make through a lens of sustainability,” said mr. Bean, president of Green planning & Coaching. The concept of sustainability isn’t new. what is new is the level to which companies are embracing the concept. according to a study from MIT Sloan Management Review and the Boston Consulting Group, there are two types of businesses: “embracers” and “cautious adopters.” Embracers, the study argues, believe sustainability is core to their business. They also happen to be the highest performing of the businesses interviewed for the study. in Worcester, businesses such as Community Realty are embracing sustainability with small steps. seven local businesses, including Community Realty, were recognized as leaders last month in the first year of the Worcester Sustainable Business Leader Program. The program encourages local businesses to address seven categories, including energy efficiency, pollution control and local purchasing. After paying $400 to participate, businesses receive an audit from mr. Bean; he drafts sustainability action plans tailored to each business. most businesses, in Worcester and elsewhere, start with cutting waste and cutting use of electricity, water and fuel. When businesses use less resources, they also cut their costs. mr. Rio, of the employer association AIM, said cost savings are the top reason businesses are embracing sustainability, especially during and after a tough recession. But the benefits extend beyond lower costs, sustainability advocates say. “if you become a sustainable business leader, you can enhance yourself and sustain your brand,” said will O’Brien, director of the Worcester Sustainable Business Leader Program and executive in residence at Clark University. “if you differentiate yourself and attract more customers, you’ll increase your revenue.” Brand identity was the reason most businesses in the Sloan/BCG study named as the greatest benefit of addressing sustainability. Sustainability can come with costs. A company that decides to install solar panels, for example, must be willing to put down some money. But advocates say the long-term savings of such practices outweigh the short-term costs. The University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester is embracing sustainability in a big way. The school hired Melissa Lucas as its first manager of sustainability and energy two years ago. Along with taking other steps, the school has installed a software program that automatically shuts down most of its computers every night. that change alone will cut an estimated $175,000 from the school’s annual electric bill, Ms. Lucas said. “We’re trying to maximize resources,” said James R. Fessendon, a medical school spokesman. “that is in tandem with our mission of enhancing care for the commonwealth.” Increasingly, multinational corporations are also citing sustainability as part of their missions — partly because that’s what they’re expected to do. “most of the big companies are into this because their stockholders are into it,” said mr. Bean, the sustainability consultant. “There’s starting to be more pressure from stockholders.” Retail giant Wal-Mart Stores inc., for example, has three broad sustainability goals: to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, to create zero waste and to sell products that sustain people and the environment. Sustainable practices come in many forms. At Big Y Foods inc. of Springfield, which operates 61 supermarkets, sustainability is about the source of seafood. Big Y now offers fish certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, an international organization that certifies seafood that comes from sustainable fisheries. Sustainable fisheries operate in a way that maintains fish populations and maintains the integrity of ocean ecosystems. “if we, as a country, plan to have seafood in the future, sustainable seafood is extremely important,” said Gary Bolduc, Big Y’s director of meat and seafood. Big Y’s costs — and, therefore, customers’ costs — did not change when the grocery chain decided to offer MSC-certified seafood, mr. Bolduc said. so why offer it? in Big Y’s case, the benefit was less tangible than cost savings. “we felt it was important to get into this before other companies do,” mr. Bolduc said. “It’s important to be on the forefront. we think it gives us a very big competitive edge.” Worcester Airport Limousine is cutting costs by cutting its use of power, water and paper. But office administrator Maureen Raillo also alluded to less tangible benefits. “It’s part of running a business based on good values,” she said. “Many people look to do business with people that care.” The fact that sustainability is a term now commonly heard in offices big and small doesn’t mean it’s always used correctly. Last year, Advertising Age put sustainability on its list of “words we wish you’d stop saying.” It’s a good concept gone bad, by misuse and overuse, Advertising Age said. still, experts say sustainability is here to stay. A Harvard Business Review report called sustainability a “megatrend,” something that forces fundamental shifts in how companies compete. “Megatrends require businesses to adapt and innovate,” the article says, “or be swept aside.” Articles most Read Today

DIY Energy Is Free and Saves Money

Learning how to build solar panels and wind turbines enables you to create electricity without depleting resources. It may cost money to build DIY energy devices, but the energy they produce is free. In the long run, you save a significant amount of money while contributing to conservation of the environment. when you use one or both of these methods to create electricity for your home, you set an example that others will eventually follow. Simply put, DIY energy is just a good idea.

DIY Solar Panels

Solar panels collect energy from the sun and convert it into electricity that can be used directly and stored for times when sunlight is not available or is limited, ensuring a continuous flow of electrical power. you can have a professional solar panel system installed if you can afford the cost or you can build the panels yourself for a substantially lower cost. Solar panel kits that include all the parts and instructions are widely available and relatively affordable. It is even cheaper to build solar panels from scratch; though it takes a good guidebook and some practice do it properly. Solar panels are one of the most practical DIY energy sources.

DIY Wind Turbines

Wind turbines are tower structures with curved blades that rotate as wind blows through them. the blades are attached to a magnetic generator that creates usable electricity. like solar panels, this electricity is immediately accessible or it can be stored in a battery array or the local power grid for later use so that you have a constant supply of electricity. the height of the wind turbine tower determines the amount of energy that is harnessed for electricity. Wind speeds decrease closer to the ground and increase higher above the ground. a tower that is 60-100 feet is usually sufficient to yield plenty of electricity. Wind turbines of this size usually require professional assistance to build, but it is well worth the cost. when less land is available, large wind turbines may not be possible. In this case, there are wind turbine kits that you can purchase and install on the roof of your house. you can build more than one if necessary. Wind turbines generally produce more power than solar panels, yet either DIY energy source is practical.

Other Benefits

Whether you build wind turbines, solar panels or both, you can cut out your monthly power bill expense and save money. These DIY energy sources pay for themselves in a short period of time. there is an added benefit to installing these as well: any excess electricity produced can be sold to the power company or to neighbors and businesses. you can actually gain passive income while doing your part to help the environment. there are no power surges from these devices, so fire safety is improved.

Conclusion

DIY energy is definitely the way of the future. as fossil fuel resources are depleted and nuclear power continues to be hazardous and expensive, alternatives will have to take the place of these polluting energy sources. Start planning for your solar panels or wind turbines now and do your part to change the world for the better.

Unions endorse solar proposal

ALBANY — Solar energy advocates say efforts to create a new market-driven solar incentive program in New York got a major boost recently when labor unions backed the idea.

Over the past two legislative sessions, various bills have been considered to create a new program to support the development of both small and large solar electric installations.

New York has a mere 54 megawatts of solar electric capacity — compared to more than 1,300 megawatts of wind power across the state.

Solar advocates say solar’s potential in the Empire State is virtually limitless when considering that solar panels can be put almost anywhere and would be especially effective on the rooftops in places such as New York City, where additional cheap power is needed most.

But New York lags states like New Jersey, which, at nearly 300 megawatts of solar capacity, trails only California as the state with the most vibrant solar industry.

On Tuesday, a group called New York Solar Jobs Coalition, which recently got the backing of the AFL-CIO, said it hopes to get new legislation passed that would help drive the installation of 5,000 megawatts of solar power in New York by 2025, an ambitious goal that would create tens of thousands of new jobs — and potentially lure a new wave of manufacturing to the state.

“Job creation is a huge priority for New York right now,” said Ed Malloy, president of the New York State Building and Construction Trades Council. “This issue is one that has great potential.”

Under the plan, the state would oversee the distribution of so-called solar renewable energy credits that would be generated by new solar installations.

Depending on their annual sales, utilities would be required to buy a certain percentage of these solar credits from developers and others — essentially providing a subsidy or incentive that would encourage developers and businesses to finance solar projects.

Installers of large-scale projects would also be required to pay prevailing union wages on job sites. Both labor and solar advocates say this will ensure the quality of work, while also making sure the program creates well-paying jobs.

Such a program would likely raise electric bills in the short term. But advocates say the plan would speed market adoption of solar energy, leading to a drop in its cost and to lower energy prices.

New York state already has a state-funded incentive program for small-scale solar installations, and it also subsidizes large-scale renewable energy projects through utility bills. But solar, because of its cost and other factors, has not taken off as quickly as wind power has.

Renewable energy advocates say a renewed focus on solar energy could make New York a major hub for the industry.

Carrie Cullen Hitt, president of Solar Alliance, a national trade association, says 14 new jobs would be created for every million dollars invested in solar projects in New York.

“Investing in solar power is an investment in New York’s future,” Hitt said.

Boat Solar Power System Works in House

After moving off the boat and into a house, I was totally taken aback when our first electric bill came. My first thought was that it was high because we used all that electricity in the move in and set up. The second and third bills were also high. I unplugged everything that I could and made sure things were turned off when possible. I replaced all the incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs and LED bulbs. An electrician friend checked the place for any problems that could be the cause of what I though was a high bill. Nothing outrageous was found. The house just used a lot more electricity than I liked.

The boat has both solar panels and a wind generator. They charge the boat’s batteries that supply electricity for the boat. The 12 volt system runs the lighting, refrigerator, our fans, our computers, TV, and navigation system. everything but the A/C and the hot water heater ran off the batteries. At the dock, we plugged into shore electricity for the A/C and hot water heater. The house could use solar panels to charge a bank of batteries the same way.

The cost of a commercial home solar panel system and the batteries needed to tie in to the grid was way out of my reach. A 12 volt system like that on the boat was affordable. I started with a 45 watt solar panel kit from our hardware outlet store. The kit contained the three solar panels, a voltage regulator, two 12 volt dc light bulbs that have a standard lamp base to them, and wiring. I used two deep cycle trolling motor batteries that I had to complete the system. this kit solar panel system was affordable. The solar panels are mounted on a wheel barrel like cart so they can be moved and positioned to get the best angle to the sun. this lets the panels produce the most power. About once a month they need just a little repositioning. The battery charging station is outside in the car port. The gives good ventilation and easy access to the batteries. The panels and batteries are heart of the system. to complete the system, a two wire 12 volt line was run up to the attic and run the full length of the house. The line was run in PVC conduit and is labeled 12 volt line on every section of conduit just for safety. next, 12 volt ceiling mounted LED lighting units were mounted in most of the rooms of the house. Marine and RV stores have a good selection of these fixtures. The fixtures were wired in to the 12 volt line and the house had 12 volt LED lights. The size and brightness of the fixtures were picked for the areas they lit. Bright lighting was used in the kitchen, halls and bath rooms got smaller units. One DC line was run into the living room. The two DC light bulbs were put in to Table lamps and these lamps are wired in to the 12 volt system. A DC to AC converter connected to the 12 volt system can run small AC items. A master switch by the car port door turns on or off the 12 volt system. When we leave in the morning it goes off, and is turned on when we get home. this lets the solar panels charge the batteries up easier. The system worked. another panel kit and battery was added and the system did not flatten as much. The system, as is, costs about $275.00 and it paid for itself in less than six months. Putting switches on the ceiling fixtures so they did not run all the time would also help extend the battery life between charges. The cost and work to add switches is not worth the effort to do that at this time.

The 12 volt system does 4 things for us. First, our electric bill is lower. Second, we have lights when there is a power outage. third, my trolling motor batteries are always charged and ready to go. Fourth, and last, it drives the guy next door nuts (that is worth it by itself).

The Word “Vulture” Is Never Spoken

My bio indiates that I enjoy good wine and bad science fiction movies. I got the double-shot yesterday. We’ll begin with a nice pinot grigio, Arca Maggiore ’10. My friends favor sweet wines and I prefer them dry, so a pinot grigio is a good compromise as there are sweet notes and a cirspness that I find refreshing and interesting. the reviewers aren’t lying when they refer to the green apple taste; it went very nicely with a garlic and pepper roasted chicken. As a bonus, the price point is below ten dollars, so it’s easy to grab a bottle or two and only laying out a Hamilton for a bottle is pretty painless even if the wine turns out to be not to your liking.

But really, you aren’t interested in the wine and I’m not, either. A nice Pinot Grigio is a transitory pleasure; the stuff is drunk so young, and is easy enough to find in at least reasonable quality, that I do not see any need to invest tremendous effort into finding really good stuff. Grab pretty much any bottle and you’re good to go.

No, by now, you’re wondering about the bad science fiction movie. and I’ve got a doozy for you.

Birdemic: Shock and Terror is at minimum a bronze-medal candidate for worst movie of the decade, and should get a nod, if not an honorable mention, on the all-time list. the movie purports to tell the story of Rod and Nathalie, a very attractive and successful couple falling in love in Silicon Valley, whose romance is interrupted by the sudden and ominous attack of birds turned into malign monsters, while at the same time delivering an important environmental message. in execution, however, what the movie delivers is a troika of dreadful ennui, stunned disbelief, and moments of cruel point-and-laugh hilarity not unlike watching the William Hung audition.

Inspired at least as much by Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space (a movie which actually had, in absolute dollars, a larger budget than Birdemic) as Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, the movie includes nearly every hallmark of awful filmmaking. I won’t even pretend this is a comprehensive list:

You might notice how it looks like the brunette girl really looks like she got shot to death by the blonde girl. a similar, but even more egregious, misuse of guns is perpetrated by a character who is supposed to be an Iraq War vet using a semi-automatic weapon to shoot at birds attacking a bus filled to the brim with three extras.

The fires and explosions were immensely more believable in the PC videogame Diablo II.

The YouTube clip above doesn’t show the Acid Egg Attack, either. Or maybe it did; I could only get through about three minutes of it before the Wife made me turn it off becasue she just couldn’t stand it. (EDIT: Yes, you can see the Acid Egg Attack, at about 3:45.) You don’t get a good look at the visibly-breathing dead people and the re-used Red Cross disaster training makeup used to show the instantly fatal efects of instantaneous encounters with birds.

Really, it’s kind of a challenge to set out the movie’s flaws. Kind of like eating an elephant — you just have to start somewhere and start working through it. There is probably no facet of filmmaking — foley, electrical work, boom mike handling, blocking, costuming — that is not laughably bad about this film. Please don’t infer any sort of priority of evaluation in the order of the list above; I can’t say, for instance, whether the dialogue was worse than the alleged cameo appearance of Tippi Hedrin — a credit whose origins are so sketchy it borders on being an outright lie.

The director, James Nguyen, plans to release a 3d sequel next year, set in Hollywood. From the YouTube interview I liked to above, he seems to relish in the awfulness of his creations. good for him — it would be much more sad if he actually took himself seriously. instead, we can all in good humor and good conscience get a little bit inebriated, and then revel in the spectacular craptitiude that is Birdemic: Shock and Terror.

How to Make Solar Panels – 3 Steps Found in Solar E-Books for Generating Electricity From the Sun

Solar e-books provide valuable information, instructions and guidelines on how to build a solar panel to generate electricity from the renewable resources of the Sun. Instructions provide easy-to-understand schematic drawings that allow any do-it-yourself individual the ability to construct both simple and complex solar power systems. With the continuous rise in costs of conventional fossil-fuel produced electricity, it makes sense to seek out alternative avenues to save on your utility bills without altering your lifestyle. With the availability of inexpensive photovoltaic cells, the working heart of any solar power panel, it is now possible to construct your own basic single solar panel, whole house system or anything in between.

While it may seem challenging to figure out the complexities of converting energy from the sun into usable electrical power, pre-manufactured photovoltaic solar cells simplify the entire process. Without any movable parts, the solar cell automatically converts the Sun’s energy into valuable electricity. the only other two main components necessary to collect that energy is to fabricate a container to house the solar cell and wiring to move that electricity to the lighting or appliance you want to run. the container, or module, typically has a sheet of glass on the working side, or sun-side of the unit, which allows sunlight to pass through to the protected wafers of the semiconductor of the solar cell. By using the following simple steps, you can reduce or eliminate your monthly utility bills.

Invest Yourself in the Process – Key to the process is gaining a thorough understanding of how this simple system works, along with the materials needed to assemble a solar panel. Numerous Do-It-Yourself websites offer instructional steps and schematics, laying out all necessary information for building, installing and maintaining a solar power generating system. Included in these guidelines are different efficient ways to construct your system, both with or without using a battery. Building one or more DIY solar panels immediately provides you with electricity to begin lowering your monthly utility costs.

Solar Panel Construction – Most of the materials needed to assemble your first solar panel module can be found locally at your home improvement center. High-quality photovoltaic semiconductor solar cells are available directly from the manufacturer, or can be bought on the Internet at greatly reduced reasonable prices at online auctions, such as eBay. Most do-it-yourself individuals can assemble, install and begin using a single panel in just a few hours. Most instructions include how to construct the panel to be used in a fixed location, or offer portability to be used on camping trips or in remote locations.

Going Totally Green – The ultimate design for those interested in living totally green is to fabricate a whole house solar power panel system capable of generating enough energy to supply all the electrical needs of your home, both day and night. though this sounds complicated, a whole house system is nothing more than a group of simple single solar panel units connected together. By connecting a group of modules, or individual solar panels, in a series, you can produce an additive voltage. the connected cells, in a parallel yield a much higher electrical current. One of the luxuries of creating your own solar power system is the ability to build your whole house system a little at a time, as you can afford it. Schematic drawings will show you how to include a battery system large enough to handle and store this excess energy to be used after sunset. Additionally, a great money-saving solar panel design is to feed any generated electricity, not immediately required, directly to the local utility grid, using inverters. known as a grid-connected photovoltaic solar power system, you can simply use the grid to store your power until it is required, such as after sunset. Building a large system can also provide you with a monthly income, by producing electricity not needed to support the energy requirements of your home.

Times being what they are, rising fuel costs create the need to become invested in looking for alternative ways to generate electricity inexpensively. Being able to harness free energy from the renewable resource of the Sun not only helps manage your monthly utility costs, but also helps save the planet. a well-built do-it-yourself solar power-generating system can last for decades, with no additional costs once the unit has been manufactured and installed.

Knowledge of exactly how to build these different highly efficient systems can be found by downloading this solar e-book on DIY Solar Power Panels. Additionally, you should seek out information on how to construct a solar hot water system to support the heated-water laundry and bathing needs of your family. also, generating electricity using windmills is a creative and inexpensive way to use the natural resources surrounding your home every day.

How to Make a Solar Panel – Homemade Solar Panels

Homemade Solar panels are becoming an increasingly popular project for the householder to undertake in order to alleviate the financial pressures the power bill brings, as well as giving a helping hand to the environment around us.

Until recently how to make a solar panel was a process thought by most people to be only undertaken by experts in the area. Fortunately this is nonsense, solar power panels can easily be built by the average handy person with materials you can get from your local hardware store for around $200.

Quite a few companies are now producing and promoting their own how to make a solar panel guide. these guides to homemade solar panels, retail for about $40 – $60 and are primarily available online via digital download.

Having purchased three of these guides and built my own solar panels I found they are comprised of a simple, easy to follow illustrated step by step hand book, often complimented by videos which show you very clearly what items you need to assemble and how to put together your homemade solar panels and install them on or around your house.

Once you put your how to make solar panel guide into practice you will soon reap the benefits, particularly financially. I estimate I have slashed over 70% from my power bill, when you package this with the ability to use power more liberally and maintain power during power outages, whether you choose to become totally dependent on solar or just wish to supplement your power needs, it makes sense for every household to have their own system.

The major attraction of homemade solar panels is it allows you to take full advantage of the suns power, a renewable and environmentally clean source of energy and best of all its free. Imagine no more exorbitant power bills, whether you choose to become totally dependent on solar power or simply use it to supplement power from your power company, you can be free to use as much as you wish.

Canadian solar project wins top environment award

(AFP)–9 hours ago

VIENNA — Canada has scooped a top prize for environmental protection awarded by the Austrian foundation Energy Globe for a community project that uses solar-powered heating to warm local houses.

The Energy Globe World Award for Sustainability was handed to the Drake Landing Solar Community project in Alberta, west Canada, in a ceremony late Friday in Wels, Austria.

In the Canadian town of Okotoks, where temperatures drop well below freezing in winter, residents have devised a huge communal heat storage system.

Solar energy is collected in underground tubes during the summer and then used to heat 52 local homes in the winter.

This solar power currently meets 80 percent of the community’s energy needs and the project is on track to meet a target of 90 percent in 2012.

Projects in more than 50 countries competed for awards from Energy Globe, which supports around 1,000 projects in some 100 countries.

The Water prize went to a Nicaraguan charity that has used solar energy to pump and filter drinking water in rural communities since 2004.

In the Air category, judges honoured the Swiss supermarket chain Migros for the energy conservation policy it has had in place for the last 30 years and a project in the Swedish port of Gothenburg where an onshore power supply is provided using energy from wind turbines.

The far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok, Russia, won the Earth award for a “passive energy” scheme that uses solar power to heat even the coldest Siberian living room.

Home Solar Power System – Why Pay $1000′s For Solar Power Systems When You Can Build Your Own

Because of the growing rise in the point of interest of such concerns as Global warming, the world appears to be paying a lot more attention to the topic of solar powered energy. the term solar power describes almost any process that harnesses energy from the sun and then works by transforming this power into electricity, for example home solar power systems.

There are actually a number of distinct significant issues that are involved or might be optionally active in the putting in of home solar power systems. the most common procedures included are: solar design in architecture, solar heating systems, solar cooking, and solar lighting. although these are classified as the preferred and common in terms of a home solar power system, there are lots of other available choices.

Solar power can be used in the architecture factor of your home solar energy system, because solar design is known to attain a comfortable temperature along with light levels with little if any additional energy.

The subject of passive solar can also be involved here, and that is the increasing of the entrance of the sun in cold weather and minimizing it in summer; then there is also that of active solar power, that describes the using of additional devices such as pumps and fans to be able to direct warm and cool air or fluid.

In relation to solar heating systems, most are systems which often make use of sunlight as a way to heat the water of the home, and these distinct types of systems may be used to heat domestic hot water or for space heating, nevertheless, they are most frequently used to heat swimming pools.

You will find three most basic types which all solar heating systems come under, which includes: active systems which make use of pumps to circulate water or a heat transfer fluid, passive systems which circulate water or a heat transfer fluid by natural circulation, and batch systems which use a tank that is directly heated by sunlight.

In the topic of solar cooking, there is a solar box cooker which is used to literally trap the sun’s power into an insulated box, which can then be used for cooking. In regards to solar lighting, the entire interior of a building – such as your home – can be lit during daylight hours using light tubes, and generally, it is claimed that this actually gives the interior a more natural light and can be used to reduce the energy demands of electric lighting.

More and more people worldwide are starting to build do-it-yourself (DIY) solar electric panels to implement home solar power systems. They are doing so by purchasing products which have easy to follow instructions which are written for those with no DIY experience. These products include videos and lists of all needed materials which can be picked up at your local hardware store, all for around $200.
