Solar Panel Installation

Solar Energy Facts for Kids

Solar energy is a form of energy that is harnessed from the sun. Solar energy, just like many  other sources of power, can be used to run machines and industries.

Solar energy happens to be a source of heat and light energy for homes. it can be used for  many purposes in the house, including: cooking food, powering vehicles, running machines,  heating and cooling the inside of the house and as a way of lighting the home, as well.

Solar energy is environmentally friendly as it does produce carbon gases or any green house  emissions. Energy from the sun is trapped through use of solar panels and other sun capturing devices. the greatest advantage of solar energy is that the sun is a never ending source of natural power.

Solar energy is taken directly from the sun and converted into electrical and thermal energy for easier use. Solar energy has many other uses, including creating a germinating atmosphere for growing plants. it is also a source of energy for animals and humans. it brings all living creatures essential Vitamin D.

Every evening the sun sets in the west. during the night, there is no solar source for energy. This is the reason that solar cells which collect energy from the sun’s rays in the daytime are hooked to batteries and generators where the solar energy is stored. This stored energy allows users to have access to electricity during the night. the energy which is used up throughout the night will be replaced by new energy that is connected during the following day.

For a solar system to work there has to be solar cells that store solar energy. the solar cells are small and are part of the solar system panels. They receive the solar energy from the sunlight and convert it into electric power in the solar system. the solar energy that has been converted is then stored in batteries. That energy is then transferred to electrical lines throughout the home.

Solar panels can be placed in different locations and can be used to generate power for homes, businesses and for channeling power into larger electrical grids, as well. They can be placed on rooftops of the house or office building or even outside.

Solar panels can even be placed on top of street lights, phone booths and on objects like calculators. Solar panels can be used to power all of these objects. They can even be used to power mobile phones. Solar cells are easily spotted, as they are black and have small lines on them.

Solar Panels Sussex – Can’t Decide Which Of The Solar Panels Are The Top To Implement?

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. thanks for visiting!

Are you searching for solar panels Sussex? There are quite a lot of good firms in and around Sussex that sell solar panels at very good prices. that is certainly great news if you happen to ask me. Choosing the right panels are some things that you require to give a great deal of time. in order to make sure you make a good decision, here are the types of solar panels you can find.

1. Monocrystalline Solar Panels

These solar panels Sussex are the foremost successful panels and also the most costly ones. They use monocrystalline cells to turn sun light into energy. the cells themselves are grown in single crystals, which is a very expensive process as there is need of a lot of crystals. the cells start out as silicon rods which are then cut into 0.2 to 0.4 mm thick disks.

Such solar cells create probably the most amount of energy, even on gloomy days. but in order for them to work at their full capacity, you would have to buy a really expensive system as well.

2. Polycrystalline Solar Panels

The difference between these and the mono ones is that they cost a lot less, but the difference in efficiency isn’t that big. the differentiation between them is that these are usually not grown in lone crystals, these are grown in outsized blocks of crystals, that the producing method is a lot less expensive. This type of solar panels are the best to be used because they are cheaper, and they are still very good without requiring expensive equipment to make them work.

3. Amorphous Solar Panels

These are the cheapest solar panels Sussex. They’re quite diverse from the previous two due to the fact that they don’t work with cells, they’re just a thin layer of silicon spread on a glass or metal foot. their functioning is pretty terrible matched against the cell based panels. but the good side about these sort of solar panels is that they can cut into really big strips that can cover very large areas.

My opinion would be to acquire the middle ones. This is if you don’t need any unique criteria. Like if you live in a place where sun light is scarce, in that case you would be best to go for the mono ones. If not, then use the second kinds of cells.

These are the three kinds of solar panels out there. Ensure you make the best decision when picking yours. Remember the weather where you live after which make a conclusion.

Green light for safety, economy

THIS year the Mackay Regional Christmas Lights competition has gone green.

Ergon Energy executive manager Peter Billing was in town recently and shared some top tips on how to save power when decorating for Christmas.

he said the new ‘greener' lights still looked great but were safer and better for the environment.

“You still get the magnificence of the display, but you can do it in a way where you are saving on power,” Mr Billing said.

Ergon Energy suggests that people convert to strings of solar festive lights.

these lights use free energy from the sun and are now readily available.

they also suggest that people switch to LED festive lights because they use less power than incandescent bulbs.

Ergon also suggest leaving your lights on for less time and using a timer on them.

Mr Billing said he enjoyed looking at Christmas lights in Mackay.

“I have been involved in the final presentations and awarding in previous years,” he said.

“To see the effort they put in, and the amount of joy they get out of the process it's just great. My wife and I still go for a drive to see all the lights. It's good to see not just the kids but the adults getting joy out of it as well.”

New Technology and Spray-On Solar Panels

More and more people are making use of energy efficient products; one of the types of technology seeing greater popularity is solar panels. These large glass panels are installed in open areas such as roofs to gain maximum solar exposure and to generate electricity. Ironically, this current technology may become obsolete. a new kind of technology promises a spray-on solar generator with the use of nanotechnology.

Creating photovoltaic cells that can be used as paint is an extraordinary feat. The team working on this project is hoping to achieve the somewhat impossible task of using nanocrystals. Developers use four inorganic materials: copper, indium, gallium, and selenide. These particles are then dispersed in a solvent to form a unique type of paint that can function like a large photovoltaic cell.

Limitations

The existing solar technology is a huge leap from earlier versions; despite that, there are still many limitations to its design. for one, creating a panel from individual photovoltaic cells is a laborious and time- consuming process, which is why the cost of a single panel remains high, despite the reduction of the cost of the material.

Another drawback is the amount of space needed to get the device in position. Usually, this kind of structure takes up a huge portion of a lawn; in areas where there is very limited space, installation of the panel is completed by a contractor on the roof, which is a costly project as well as the risk of damaging the roofing during the installation process. Positioning each panel for direct exposure to the sun also means that the panels are susceptible to damage from other elements, such as strong wind, hail, snow, and heavy rain.

Advantages

The idea of a spray-on solar generator may seem futuristic; however, the technology is already a reality and in the process of refinement. one of the biggest advantages of the nano material is that it can be painted on any type of surface, whether it is plastic, metal or even fabric. Unlike conventional panels, there is no need for extensive modification of the structure where it will be applied.

Although the material comes in liquid form, it works similarly to conventional solar panels. The paint can be differentiated into three layers. a conductor is at the bottom, while the top collects the charges, and a third layer in the middle separates the top and bottom layer and actually absorbs the light.

Currently, the challenges that developers are encountering is improving the efficiency of the nano material. Current designs are only achieving three percent efficiency, whereas the goal is ten percent efficiency before going commercial. other base materials are being tested that have same effect as copper, indium, gallium, and selenide; the requirement is that any such material be abundant in supply in order to further reduce the production costs. Despite these challenges, developers are optimistic that nanotechnology is the next step in solar power development.

A spray-on solar generator is a promising technological advancement, especially now that many individuals are seeking energy sources that are not generated by fossil fuel. It is unknown exactly when this technology of spray-on solar panel will be available commercially’ it is something that is definitely worth anticipating in the coming years

Solar panels expose firefighters to added danger

As the installation of solar panels continues to increase across the country, so does the need to ensure that firefighters are safe when they encounter these types of units at a structural fire.

New Jersey, in particular, has experienced a tremendous growth in solar panel installation in recent years. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, the Garden State recently surpassed California as the state with the most solar panel units. new Jersey’s solar panel installations now account for 24 percent of all those across the United States – a statistic increasing the likelihood that emergency service workers will sooner or later find themselves at an incident involving panels.

The “widespread popularity” of solar panels has emerged as “one of the new challenges facing firefighters,” the National fire Protection Association (NFPA) believes, something that requires “special tactical and strategic considerations.” and, it prompted the association to begin looking into changes to the electrical code to protect first responders, modifications that it hopes will result in a standard way to shut down energy leaving the system.

According to Woodcliff Lake Councilman Jeff Bader, concerns about handling fires at structures involving panels was expressed at a meeting of the Tri-Boro Public Safety Committee, a group consisting of police chiefs, fire chiefs, OEM coordinators and EMS personnel from Montvale, Park Ridge and Woodcliff Lake. Bader, who acts as chairman of the committee, recalled that firefighters from the three towns cited a variety of safety issues related to solar panels, units that are increasingly popping up on both buildings and atop PSE&G utility poles.

Woodcliff Lake fire Chief Jared Shapiro said he thinks solar panels definitely present the potential for a “dangerous situation,” including electrocution. Shapiro pointed out that while regulations exist requiring buildings constructed with a truss roof to have a label on the exterior, there is nothing in effect requiring structures with solar panels.

Ultimately, the committee’s discussion prompted Bader to approach Assemblyman Robert Schroeder (District 39-R) to see if something could be done at either the local or state level to make it safer for firefighters.

The result was the introduction of a bill, A-4288, on Nov. 21 into the new Jersey State Assembly, which would require buildings to clearly label whether they have solar panels, as well as require the installation of external shut-off switches with newer systems.

Schroeder, a volunteer firefighter in Washington Township for over 30 years, said that while “solar energy is a great way to lower electricity bills and protect the environment” they also “pose an unintended threat to firefighters.”

“Safe firefighting requires knowledge and awareness of the situation. This [requirement] will let emergency responders know when there’s a threat of electrocution because the building is actively harnessing power from the sun,” the assemblyman said. “We can have clean, reliable energy without making fires any more dangerous than they already are. as a firefighter, I know how important it is to quickly know as much as possible about a burning structure that I might have to enter. This simple preventative measure could very well save the life of one of our brave first responders.”

Bader, who called the proposed legislation a “no-brainer” said “it doesn’t cost anyone to put a sign on their building… The more information a firefighter knows about a building, the safer it makes for him to enter it.”

Worcester Telegram & Gazette – telegram.com – Tantasqua schools going solar by Thanksgiving

STURBRIDGE —  It looks like something out of a science fiction movie — row upon row of solar panels, harnessing the energy of the sun. But far from being an extraterrestrial monster bent on world domination, it is a man-made contraption intended to do nothing more threatening than save the Tantasqua schools money. Specifically, 15 percent on the school’s annual electricity bill. Superintendent Daniel G. Durgin recently showed off the combined project, which he said is altogether the largest solar energy school project in the state to date. the project consists of the installation and operation of a solar photovoltaic energy system at both Tantasqua Regional Junior High School, 320B Brookfield Road, and the high school, across the street at 319 Brookfield Road. Before the ascent to the roof, mr. Durgin pointed at a row of 100 kilowatt Satcon Solstice Inverters and LCD computer monitors that will keep track of the electricity being created. “Close to two years ago, we were looking at alternative energy because our energy education, our energy plan, ends this December,” mr. Durgin explained. “So I said, well, at the end of that, we have to look at continuing capturing the savings. So what type of alternative energy can we do? are we in a wind area? not here. Solar was the way. We worked with several solar companies. We had some consulting done.” after a ride by elevator to the third floor and then a climb up a steep metal staircase to get to the roof, visitors can see the main power source, acres of blue mirrored solar panels on the junior high’s gym roof. “This system here is a little under 1,000 panels (on the junior high school) and the high school is more than 2,000 panels,” mr. Durgin said. “these are all hooked together, held down by the blocks on a pad, so there is no penetration of the roof at all.” Within a few days, the junior high school solar energy project is expected to be fully operational, while the high school is expected to follow suit by Thanksgiving. Workers from Broadway Renewable Strategies LLC/Broadway Electrical co. of Boston have spent close to three months to complete the project at the junior high, and will take a little longer at the high school. “I was told by Broadway Electric, who did Medway High School, they did Logan Airport, this is the largest solar project on a school in the state (to date),” mr. Durgin said. the first year’s output is expected to be 304,419 kilowatt-hours for the junior high and 719,721 kilowatt-hours for the high school. This will offset approximately 20 percent of the junior high school’s yearly usage and 35 percent of the high school’s yearly usage, according to Broadway. in both cases, the system will furnish Tantasqua with solar-generated electricity at a defined per-kWh rate under a solar power purchase agreement. “Even with snow on the panels, it is still collecting sunlight. Even on cloudy days, it can generate electricity. Nighttime is the only time it doesn’t,” mr. Durgin said. “any new technology that comes out they will come out and replace it because it’s for their advantage to make the most electricity they can.” the district spends close $750,000 a year for its combined electricity, mr. Durgin said. With the new solar project in place, Tantasqua will save approximately 15 percent of its electric bill each year, or about $113,000, which, mr. Durgin adds, is significant. “This is a 250-kilowatt array (at the junior high school), and the high school is a 600-kilowatt. That’s a lot of electricity,” mr. Durgin said. “And the good thing is they provide a solar curriculum, so our science teachers have been up on the high school roof working with the electricians, working with the folks from the solar company. It’s a great curriculum for the kids.” on top of that, the solar energy project didn’t cost the school or the taxpayers of the five towns of the district a single penny. And Broadway will take care of any snow removal necessary on the roofs at both schools that have the solar panels, mr. Durgin said. “what we’re doing, we’re providing the space and buying the electricity back from this company, Broadway Electric, at a much reduced rate. So that’s where the savings come in,” mr. Durgin said. “all we are doing is saving money for at least 30 years out.” Articles Most Read Today

Install Solar Panel Procedure : Fully Understand The Procedure Prior To Heading In Advance.

The 2002 the Northeast room darkening afflicted Forty five zillion individuals inside ten all of us says. Individuals making use of choice reasons for energy for example solar panels could take advantage of their own self-reliance coming from the power grid. Absolutely no foods proceeding negative within fridges, simply no using the darkish for the kids. The Authorities upon International Associations, the believe container, offers documented in which electrical power intake as well as manufacturing possess persistently broadened, leading to an elevated problem over a method not really created for this type of big weight, and therefore everybody is looking at solar panels regarding safety along with monetary and also ecological factors.

Solar energy is really a “green” as well as sustainable energy and give off dangerous fractional co2, meaning it’s really a fantastic way to lower your co2 presence. near Three thousand kilos associated with Carbon dioxide each year may be stored with a standard home solar energy program, which usually computes to around 25 plenty more than the life time. These types of clear, environmentally friendly systems is going to be the primary regarding the subsequent professional wave, based on A2z tony Juniper, Pals associated with the World overseer.

The utilization of solar strength considerably minimizes discovered another means, which is among the most frequent reasons behind selecting this. State and federal governing bodies provide solar bonuses, that really help to be able to counteract the original expenditures of your solar energy program. The August 2005 Energy Plan Behave offers 2 methods to obtain a solar energy taxes credit score coming from the authorities. Solar energy refunds may also be provided by greater than 50% people declares.

An common regarding 164 w regarding solar energy for each sq . gauge is actually brought to the World’s crusting through the sunshine. As we put adequate solar panels inside the Sahara leave to pay for only one pct than it, we might create sufficient electrical power in order to strength the complete world. this particular plethora regarding solar energy indicates there is certainly a lot more than we are going to actually require. yet due to the fact the strength delivered simply by the sunshine occurs like a blend of gentle and also heat, we’re not able to utilize it because it is in order to immediately energy a vehicle or perhaps a pc. this is the reason solar panels came to be — to transform the sun’s strength in to a kind we are able to make use of, such as electrical energy.

Any other electrical power an individual generate making use of your solar panels, if you are mounted on the power grid, is going to be taken care of through the power business. making up any solar energy bodies electrical power manufacturing and also allowing tools to get excessive energy through home owners, internet metering will be authorized within thirty says. The most often employed choices just one, relatively easy to fix gauge. Like a solar energy method generates electrical energy, the power are utilized initial to satisfy on-site energy desire. Excessive electrical energy will then be provided in to the power company, switching the electric powered gauge in reverse, as opposed to becoming saved in an electric battery. The home owner is actually attributed with regard to the additional power from the conclusion of every metering time period.

Excessive electrical energy may be saved to be used upon times which are cloudy. The capability to shop extra electrical energy within power packs signifies you don’t have to become mounted on the power company for gloomy times. Inside stand-alone solar energy techniques electric batteries tend to be faced with extra electrical energy regarding night-time make use of. The life-cycle of your battery power is the thing that decides the viability to use along with solar tissue. The quantity of electrical energy needed, in addition to the size the electric battery, determines the quantity of several hours energy can last in times associated with absolutely no natural light.

Bed not the culprit solar energy created? To make solar energy, you will need a solar panel, which can be made up of a number of solar tissue. Because natural light comes on to any solar cellular, the mobile ingests mild contaminants (known as photons). Every photon includes energy, when assimilated, the photon produces an electron inside the materials associated with the solar mobile. Electric powered cabling on attributes regarding the cellular permit any circulation regarding existing because the photon is actually assimilated. that way, the solar cellular creates electrical energy, which is often utilized right away, or even kept inside a electric battery with regard to long term make use of.

Solar panels include solar tissue. an person solar mobile can’t generate sufficient energy for the majority of reasons; consequently, a number of tend to be became a member of within solar panels as a result of training course, they generate much more electrical energy with each other. Solar panels can be found in many different types as well as dimensions, the most popular which generate just as much as 60 T regarding electrical power and also contain plastic solar tissue. Adjacent solar panels generate a lot more electrical power.

The solar panel is really a large toned, rectangle-shaped condition, generally approximately the proportions of any rad along with a doorway. Energy enthusiasts, referred to as solar tissue, make-up solar panels. The solar cellular is generally 8-sided as well as blue-black colored, concerning the size your own hand. Much like the tissues in the battery power, these kinds of tissues are meant to produce electrical energy. Nonetheless, these kinds of tissue make use of natural light as opposed to chemical substances to produce electrical energy. Solar panels may also be known as solar panels (or even Solar panels), which will come from the mix of the Ancient greek phrase regarding gentle, and also electrical power leader Alessandro Volta.

You might be interested in learning exactly how sunshine will be turned into electrical energy. whenever the sunshine stands out on to any solar mobile, photons (gentle allergens) are usually inundated on to the top the surface of the mobile. Every gentle chemical next bears the energy straight down by means of the mobile. The photons after that exchange their capability to be able to electrons within the reduce level associated with the mobile. The electrons utilize this energy to flee directly into the signal simply by leaping the hurdle in to the top level. The movements of the electrons by means of the routine creates the strength for the appliance and lighting.

Pv cells produce electrical power through natural light, however there are more options for producing solar energy. you can even obtain solar-thermal solar panels that warmth drinking water rather than making electrical power. Solar-thermal solar panels perform in a different way compared to Solar panels, , nor include electrical energy. Whilst they seem to be just like solar panels, rather than mild contaminants getting got simply by solar tissues, solar energy solar panels have got dark goblet that soaks in the sun’s temperature. Warm water is actually created through leading h2o among the solar panels, heating system it as the story goes, and will be routed directly into the h2o method not to mention, happens regarding the sinks since domestic hot water.

It really is extraordinary to consider in which the strength sent through the sunlight within 60 minutes, is a lot more as compared to the world makes use of each year. creating (or even upgrading) the constructing to consider good thing about natural light and also heat is utilizing inactive solar strength. this could be accomplished with the help of much more insulating material in your roofing, or even setting up an additional south-facing windowpane. any kind of “passive” changes genuinely could be put in possibly whenever the house is actually in the beginning constructed, or even in the course of key reconstruction. Incorporating solar panels or any other sunshine enthusiasts could be known as energetic solar energy.

Any kind of gentle which can hit solar panels could be changed in order to solar energy, meaning actually about grey times they are able to nonetheless generate several energy. it is possible to obtain back-up energy (for instance during the night) in a single regarding a couple of techniques. The first is you could connect with get in touch in order to the power grid within the typical approach, to ensure that this particular provides a back-up provide when ever your own solar panels usually are not working because could be the situation at night. The some other choice is keeping further electrical energy from the solar panels within power packs that will next strength the home appliances and also lighting in the course of several hours associated with the dark.

On this atmosphere of worldwide warming up and also decreasing acrylic assets, it’s wise.to show the attention to be able to organic as well as green assets. Solar energy methods are becoming the the majority of common supply of green energy as a result of the fact they help make simply no clatter as well as produce absolutely no contaminants. appropriate solar (solar) sections whilst remaining linked to the power grid will be the most frequent approach to transforming in order to solar energy. any kind of additional electrical energy created through the solar product is after that provided in to the power grid. this way the home will get covered further electrical power made, and will additionally obtain electrical energy during the night.

H2o charges could be minimize through Fifty to seventy per cent using a first-rate solar h2o panel program. aside from the obvious environment great things about solar strength, it can make economic perception. Simply by mixing each solar h2o panel and also Photovoltaic panel techniques you save much more. Installment expenses with regard to solar energy techniques tend to be higher, however, there will vary grants or loans open to aid fund solar engineering. a more inexpensive choice is to put together your own personal solar panels.

Conventional energy options tend to be demonstrating to become much more difficult and dear to utilize, which means an enlargement within the worth of solar strength. Contemplating climatic change as well as air pollution it really is obvious in which conventional energy options will not become practical. Sustainable energy resources, obviously, tend to be endless, as opposed to non-renewable gas. Because alternative energy engineering will continue to older as well as the costs associated with recognized strength resources go up, solar technologies is beginning being less expensive.

Environment friendly Fashion followers, including Cate Blanchett as well as Orlando, florida Grow, took their particular determination beyond recycling where possible as well as generating compounds. These types of celebrities have got turned to presenting solar panels as well as other sustainable energy options inside their houses, reducing their own energy make use of. Ashton “Captain Jack port Sparrow” Depp’s tropical isle within the Bahamas will be run through solar energy instead of ecologically unfavorable generation devices. “Dallas” celebrity, Ray Hagman offers preserved $24,Thousand annually simply by moving over in order to solar strength, getting his / her utility bill coming from $37,Thousand to some simple $13,500 per year.

Actor or actress, Edward cullen Norton was influenced simply by the solar panels placed in their own house which he made a plan, together with British petroleum, to offer solar energy methods to lessen revenue families within the L . a . location. via the British petroleum Solar Neighborhood friends system a free of charge solar method is agreed to a minimal revenue home whenever a superstar will buy 1. an exceptional concept, the undertaking has recently experienced a few of the better of Artist skill taking part in that, such as Owen Wilson, Alicia Silverstone and can Ferrell. this particular task is most likely adding to the 30% yearly expansion of BP’s solar department.

About 50% the planet’s power should come through environmentally friendly energy options inside the subsequent thirty years in accordance with estimations through Covering. an excellent lasting energy task will be contributed through a number of the leading international businesses, such as Complete, Whirlpool and also British petroleum. The latest British petroleum essential oil drip devastation provides flipped the planet’s focus on the improving demand for services with regard to option causes of energy and it has elevated open public curiosity about solar energy along with other green causes of energy. The significant outcomes associated with the acrylic drip possess triggered a considerable reshuffle associated with purchase focal points, together with United states energy marketing and advertising promotions putting a much more concentrate on environmentally friendly causes of energy.

The United states of america is certainly the main energy customer within the globe. 25% associated with the earth’s strength intake is as simple as the Us all — though it makes up about simply 5% associated with the complete populace regarding the world. The 100mw solar energy place inside Israel will give you a lot more than two hundred,500 individuals with electrical energy, and the’ve promises to build an a whole lot larger place within the long term — any 500mw place. The planet’s biggest solar electrical energy program are located in Bavaria, whilst about 1/2 associated with solar panels produced are utilized in The japanese. when viewing this information we could find out how much The usa must will end up in purchase to create the the majority of solar energy.

Should you switch the signal from utilizing solar panels for the house, there’s 2 elements to be able to the economic rewards. Utilizing solar energy first of all indicates reduce energy bills. next, in the event you keep in touch to be able to the power company, you have got the choice to market extra electrical energy in order to the power business. along with set up expenses nonetheless getting high, the common home solar energy method will take about 1 . 5 years to get paid itself off — despite the fact that producing your own personal solar panels can be a less costly alternative.

Additional folks are making their particular solar panels right now than in the past. Because solar method set up pricing is nonetheless quite high Do it yourself solar panels tend to be quickly becoming well-liked. As well as the procedure is simpler compared to you may be thinking. Do-it-yourself solar panels may be risk-free as well as impressive in the event that produced and also put in employing a excellent training guidebook. Undoubtedly, producing your personal solar panels will save you the preliminary installment expenses meaning the financial savings are usually increased within the long term.

House benefit may be elevated through the inclusion regarding solar panels. Based on HUD, for each $1,500 it will save you inside once-a-year power bills the worth of your own home increases through $20,Thousand. The house which can be energy effective will be regarding excellent benefit within the face of the possible purchaser. As well as the some other rewards, any solar program indicates any home features a back-up method throughout electrical power power outages. any home-buyer recognizes that should they purchase a house using a solar energy method set up, they’re also purchasing satisfaction : understanding that in the course of any kind of energy black outs they shall be untouched.

Putting in sections on the roofing which encounters far east or perhaps western side will certainly nonetheless perform : you don’t need to possess a south-facing roofing. One more efficient choice is the ground-mounted solar method put in a set, un-shaded region. any rod, cemented in to the floor keeps the solar panel in position. Power packs that have been arrested for any kind of extra electrical power created by the solar panels in the course of the day time can offer energy right away. Read: How to install solar panel.

The myth of “renewable” energy

posted at 2:45 pm on November 22, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Politicians have talked about “renewable” energy for so long that no one questions what it means any longer, writes Dawn Stover at Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a publication that prides itself on “inform[ing]  the public about threats to the survival and development of humanity from nuclear weapons, climate change, and emerging technologies in the life sciences.”  People think they know what energy sources are “renewable” — primarily the sun, the wind, and the water, although Stover includes biomass in the definition as well.  Stover points out that writers use quote marks around “clean” and “green” when discussing energy technology, but rarely around the word “renewable” — but argues that the concept of renewability deserves the same kind of skeptical treatment as “clean” or “green”:

As the US Energy Department explains it to kids: “Renewable energy comes from things that won’t run out — wind, water, sunlight, plants, and more. These are things we can reuse over and over again. … Non-renewable energy comes from things that will run out one day — oil, coal, natural gas, and uranium.”

Renewable energy sounds so much more natural and believable than a perpetual-motion machine, but there’s one big problem: Unless you’re planning to live without electricity and motorized transportation, you need more than just wind, water, sunlight, and plants for energy. you need raw materials, real estate, and other things that will run out one day. you need stuff that has to be mined, drilled, transported, and bulldozed — not simply harvested or farmed. you need non-renewable resources[.]

Solar is not renewable?  It is if all the energy you need is for a suntan, but not if you plan to convert it to electricity:

While sunlight is renewable — for at least another four billion years — photovoltaic panels are not. Nor is desert groundwater, used in steam turbines at some solar-thermal installations. even after being redesigned to use air-cooled condensers that will reduce its water consumption by 90 percent, California’s Blythe Solar Power Project, which will be the world’s largest when it opens in 2013, will require an estimated 600 acre-feet of groundwater annually for washing mirrors, replenishing feedwater, and cooling auxiliary equipment.

What about wind power?  that requires an awful lot of steel, concrete, and less-ubiquitous items like rare-earth metals, such as neodymium and dysprosium that are hard to find and harder to extract — and that take a lot of energy to produce in usable form, as we’ll note in a moment.  That’s also true of solar panels.  How about dams and hydropower?  they make the steel and concrete needs of wind turbines look like a drop in the bucket.  that doesn’t take into account all of the electrical-transmission equipment needed to bring that power to market, and all of the real estate that takes. Stover describes what it would take to convert today’s energy demand into “renewable” energy production:

But meeting the world’s total energy demands in 2030 with renewable energy alone would take an estimated 3.8 million wind turbines (each with twice the capacity of today’s largest machines), 720,000 wave devices, 5,350 geothermal plants, 900 hydroelectric plants, 490,000 tidal turbines, 1.7 billion rooftop photovoltaic systems, 40,000 solar photovoltaic plants, and 49,000 concentrated solar power systems. That’s a heckuva lot of neodymium.

Speaking of the manufacturing challenges, Tim Carney notices an interesting NY Times report on a plan by China to defuse a potential solar-tech trade war with the US in the short run, while preparing for a longer political battle.  just how “green” are solar panels in practice?  Not very, and not very efficient, either:

The manufacture of polysilicon requires enormous amounts of energy — so much electricity that it typically takes the first year of operation of the panel to generate as much power as was required to make the polysilicon in it. the process requires superheating large volumes of material in electric-arc furnaces, including the melting of quartzite rock at more than 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit….

China’s own polysilicon industry is controversial because it relies heavily on electricity generated by coal-fired power plants, and because weak environmental controls at Chinese polysilicon factories have resulted in toxic spills that have fouled streams and rivers.

China’s autocrats can get away with ruining the environment in the cause of “green” energy, but that doesn’t work out as well in the US:

Chinese manufacturers have studied moving solar cell factories directly to the United States but have largely rejected it in favor of other countries because it takes so long to comply with the many American regulations for opening new factories that use a lot of chemicals, according to a Chinese industry executive, who spoke on condition that neither he nor his employer be identified.

And China has a relative abundance in the rare-earth compounds needed for the manufacture of these panels, and the other so-called “green” energy technologies.  How about the US?  Er … not so much.  we would be even more reliant on foreign and rare resources than we are now in the fossil-fuel economy in which we currently live, so put some scare quotes around the notion of “energy independence” as a result of switching to “green” “renewable” energy, too.
